Atun: A Unique Lighting Design Inspired by Ancient Egyptian Culture

Integrating Ancient Aesthetics with Modern Identity

Darkness envelops, the land is in silence, their creator is resting in his horizon. At daybreak, arisen from the horizon, shining as the disk in day, you remove the darkness, you grant your rays, and the two lands are in festival.

Atun, a lighting product designed by Mohamed Selim El Kady, draws inspiration from the Pharaonic symbol of balance, strength, and reincarnation known as Djed. The Djed was raised on the coldest, darkest nights of the year as a reminder to reconnect with the light of righteousness. Atun aims to integrate ancient Egyptian culture aesthetics with modern Egyptian identity, resulting in distinguished products that represent Egyptian culture and have a positive impact on consumers.

What sets Atun apart is its origin in the Ancient Egyptian Civilization. The design incorporates materials that were used by the Ancient Egyptians in their crafts, such as Asersus wood, Alabaster Marble, Marmar Stone, Borosilicate glass, and gold-plated copper. These materials not only add a touch of authenticity but also contribute to the sustainability of the products, as they are environmentally friendly and recycled.

The production process of Atun involves various steps, starting from sketching the design and passing through AutoCAD and 3D MAX for visualization. CNC milling, a sample manual lathe machine, and laser cutting are used in the manufacturing process. The result is a collection of lighting products that showcase the fusion of ancient and modern techniques.

The dimensions of the Atun lighting products vary depending on the materials used. The lighting product that contains gold-plated copper and wood measures 16cm x 16cm x 27cm, while the one with wood and glass measures 10cm x 10cm x 45cm. The product that combines copper and glass has dimensions of 9cm x 9cm x 25cm.

Functionality is a key aspect of Atun's design. The product is well-designed, with attention to detail that allows users to handle it comfortably. It provides a uniform level of illumination throughout the space, independent of other lighting sources. Additionally, it ensures safe and easy traffic while creating an overview of the room.

The development of Atun took place in Cairo, Egypt, with the idea originating in 2018. The design was first exhibited in October 2018 and later showcased again in November 2021, both at the Cairo Design Award. The entire research behind Atun revolves around ancient Egyptian beliefs and the significance of light in their culture. The Djed hieroglyph, a pillar-like symbol representing stability and sometimes even Osiris himself, played a crucial role in the design's inspiration.

Recognizing its exceptional design and creative ingenuity, Atun was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures category in 2022. This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life and making the world a better place.

Atun, with its unique blend of ancient aesthetics and modern identity, stands as a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Egypt and its enduring influence on contemporary design.
